NATS chief on the future of air travel

AI may eventually transform air traffic control, though its initial impact will likely be in back-office functions. Daily operations planning, tactical and strategic pre-planning, and capacity bottleneck identification could all benefit from data-driven tools. The key question is whether AI can match the reliability of human controllers, who have refined their decision-making over decades.

Rolfe notes that decades of studying human error have shaped current safety protocols. The challenge will be proving AI’s safety. The comparison to smartphones is instructive—few anticipated how deeply they would integrate into daily life, and AI could follow a similar, unpredictable path.

The organization’s ability to adjust will determine whether it can maintain safe, punctual flights. For now, Rolfe emphasizes steady improvements rather than dramatic changes.
