Leadership changes are reshaping the banking setting across Europe and Asia. The European Investment Fund (EIF) has named Jean-Christophe Laloux as its next chief executive, effective January 1. He will succeed Marjut Falkstedt, who is retiring from the role. Laloux currently oversees lending and advisory operations for the European Investment Bank (EIB) within the European Union. He has spent more than 20 years at the EIB, helping to create financing tools for high-growth technology companies, infrastructure, and climate projects. His background includes venture debt, risk-sharing mechanisms, and project finance.

New Leadership at Major Financial Institutions

Nadia Calviño, the EIF Chair, highlighted Laloux’s history of developing innovative financing tools to support Europe’s technological competitiveness. Before joining the EIB in 1999, Laloux worked at Boston Consulting Group and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Elsewhere in the financial sector, Barclays has announced that Mike Jool and Adeel Khan will become co-CEOs of its investment bank in February. The appointment is subject to regulatory approval. Jool is moving to Barclays from Bank of America, where he co-headed global investment banking. Khan currently leads Barclays’ global markets division.

Both executives will join the bank’s group executive committee. C.S. Venkatakrishnan, Barclays Group chief executive, stated that the investment bank has delivered strong performance since 2023, growing revenues and returns. “As we enter the next stage of our strategy, and reflecting the ambition we have for our investment bank, Adeel and Mike will form a strong partnership to deliver an even stronger, more integrated service to our clients,” Venkatakrishnan said. In other appointments, Standard Chartered PLC confirmed Manus Costello as Group CFO and executive director. The position formalizes an announcement made in May. Costello is a 25-year industry veteran who spent 14 years at AllianceBernstein, rising to global head of research.

Strategic Shifts at Julius Baer

The shake-up extends to the wealth management sector, where Swiss private bank Julius Baer appointed Peter Burrill as CFO and member of the Executive Board. He will start on August 17, subject to regulatory approval. Burrill joins from Standard Chartered, where he served as interim group CFO for nine years. He previously spent nearly four years at Deutsche Bank as group controller and co-head of group finance. He succeeds Evie Kostakis following a top management reorganization. The move brings Burrill’s extensive international experience to Julius Baer, a bank focused on wealth management.

Leadership transitions often signal a strategic pivot, particularly when they happen across major financial institutions. The flow of executives between global banks—seen here with Burrill moving from Standard Chartered to Julius Baer—suggests a concerted effort to align financial leadership with specific market strategies. When a bank hires a CFO with experience in investor relations or research, it often points toward a renewed focus on communicating with shareholders or expanding specific asset classes. The focus on “integrated service” in Barclays’ statement and the emphasis on “financial expertise” at Julius Baer both suggest these new appointments are intended to streamline operations and improve stakeholder engagement.
