Ledger wallets unaffected by data incident

Ledger, a company that makes hardware wallets for digital currencies, has confirmed that its wallets are safe after a data incident at its third-party e-commerce partner, Global-e. The breach was announced on January 5, and it affected Global-e’s cloud-based systems, which manage order processing for purchases made on Ledger.com.
The incident was discovered when Global-e noticed unusual behavior in their cloud infrastructure, and they quickly stopped it before notifying third-party forensic experts to investigate. The experts found that some of the material has leaked, including basic personal information, such as names and contact information.
According to Ledger, Global-e did not hold any sensitive personal data, like dates of birth, gender, or government ID numbers. More importantly, attackers did not access financial information, such as credit card or bank account numbers. Things like account information, passwords, or any secrets related to wallets were also unaffected during the breach.

Ledger stressed that its devices were designed to be self-custodial and that they guarantee that the user will be the one to hold the private key, or 24-word seed phrase needed to manage crypto assets stored within. Global-e does not have access to any individual user’s 24 words, blockchain balance, or any secrets related to digital assets.
The company informed consumers that neither its hardware nor software was hacked, meaning that its crypto wallets remain safe. This incident highlights the importance of self-custody technology in protecting against direct fund theft. Ledger’s devices are designed to keep users’ private keys and seed phrases secure, and the company has reiterated that its wallets are safe.
In practice, this means that users who have purchased Ledger products through Global-e should be vigilant about potential phishing schemes, but they do not need to worry about their crypto assets being compromised. The incident serves as a reminder of the potential risks associated with third-party vulnerabilities in the crypto ecosystem.
The incident comes after a series of other recent hacks that targeted platforms like Coinbase and Binance, which have led to dumps of consumer data. Users of affected platforms should remain vigilant and ready for potential contact from scammers, as they may be targeted in phishing schemes.

Ledger’s response to the incident has been swift and transparent, and they have provided clear information about what happened and what users can expect. As the crypto ecosystem continues to evolve, it’s essential for companies like Ledger to prioritize security and transparency to protect their users’ assets.
They are committed to maintaining the trust of their users.
