Robeco introduces smarter indexing for Australian stocks

Robeco has launched an Enhanced Indexing strategy for Australian equities, helping institutional investors mitigate exposure to the country’s heavy concentration in large banks and mining companies. The method merges quantitative stock selection with tight risk management, directly addressing the concentration risks that passive investors face alongside the broader market.
The strategy is benchmarked against the S&P/ASX 300 Index and targets approximately 150 holdings, seeking to deliver returns while minimizing deviation from the index. Stephen Dennis, Robeco’s head of Australia and New Zealand, said institutional demand had driven the expansion. “Bringing our globally established Enhanced Indexing capability to Australian equities is a direct response to that. It gives superannuation funds and other institutions a research-led option that stays close to the benchmark, manages risk deliberately, and can be tailored to their own requirements.”
Unlike standard passive funds, this solution lets institutions predefine risk parameters, exclusions, and sustainability criteria. Robeco’s proprietary risk model assesses sector, style, macroeconomic, and statistical exposures to cap tracking error. Wilma de Groot, head of core quant equity, highlighted that despite Australia’s concentrated market, sufficient liquidity supports a diversified systematic strategy. The approach offers investors a way to stay close to a benchmark while systematically addressing a concentration problem that passive exposure alone cannot resolve.
The rollout extends Robeco’s 20 years of experience with enhanced indexing worldwide. The firm oversees $60 billion in local assets and, as of 31 July 2026, reports approximately $450 billion in global assets under management, including $236 billion managed using quantitative models. This quantitative management is supported by more than 50 investment professionals. Daily operations are handled by Robeco’s quant team, backed by regional specialists in Hong Kong and Sydney, including head of APAC fundamental Joshua Crabb and Sydney-based client portfolio manager Michael Lin.
